Chapter Nine

The minute Windi entered the hotel room, she kicked off her heels. Being far shorter than the supermodels the designer clothing she wore was made for, she wore heels most of the time. They elongated her legs and made her look better on camera. But she rarely had cause to sprint from danger in them, and her feet were killing her.

Silas glanced down at her abandoned heels with an amused tilt to his lips. Almost a crooked smile. Was that a cowboy thing or just a Silas thing?

“Want me to rub your feet, dear?” he drawled.

She shook her head. “I want a shower first. Then food. I don’t know why I feel like I haven’t eaten in a week.”

“Adrenaline and sex. I’ll order something in.” The matter-of-fact statement made her own lips twitch.

She dipped her head, suddenly shy around him. “I guess you’re right. I’ll just be in the…” She pointed to the bathroom and slipped inside.

Closing the door and being alone for a moment was a relief. She quietly sighed and stripped out of her clothes, switched on the shower and let the spray hit her.

All the little scrapes she didn’t realize she had—on her elbows, her knees—stung when the water touched them. She moaned out and closed her eyes. The events replayed in her head, but she didn’t want to dwell on them right now. She could talk it all out with her therapist when she returned to New York City.

The man had thrown her for a loop. One minute her daddy was telling her he hired her a bodyguard. The next, she was taking him bareback over the hood of a Jeep.

She dumped some bodywash into her palm and massaged it lightly over the cuts that she knew should really be properly cleaned, but decided she’d worry about that later. She had enough to concentrate on—like how her heart had gone straight to the notion of love.

In all her years of dating and even having a few long-term relationships, nothing felt like it did when Silas looked at her. She was used to being in the public eye, but Silas gave her a full-body attention that was sexy as hell.

It’s his job.

She’d reminded herself of that fact after they righted their clothing and got back into the Jeep. She’d convinced him not to go straight to the airstrip, claiming she needed time to regroup.

It wasn’t a lie. She just didn’t say that she was more wrecked from realizing she was in love with him than nearly getting killed by those explosions.

He jumped across balconies for me.

She shivered and rinsed off, twisting her shoulders into the spray to work out some of the knots that Hilary, her masseuse, would click her tongue over if Windi were stretched out on the massage table right now.

There was another knot deep
